The next few months the Canton, Ohio area might experience several snowstorms. It is important to winterize your home to help prevent water damage from the freezing temperatures, snow and ice.
SERVPRO of South & East Stark County has these 10 steps to help winterize your home:
1. Change the filter in your furnace.
- Check the drafts. Use an incense stick or something else that has a little smoke not a lot. Hold it up to outlets, windows, and flash boards. If the smoke blows, grab some caulk and start sealing.
- Insulate your attic. And easy way to see if your attic has enough insulation is to see how quickly the snow melts from your roof compare it to your neighbors. If it is melting faster compared to other houses you have a problem.
- Clean out all those families from your gutter.
- If you have an older home, wrapping your water pipes in insulation might save you from a burst pipe when it freezes.
- Check all your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Change the batteries.
- Trim any tree limbs that could fall in damage property if covered in ice.
- Prepare a 48-hour emergency kit in case you get snowed in.
- Disconnect any outside hoses and irrigation systems to keep them from freezing and bursting.
- Think ahead on any building or remodeling projects you might want to start this coming spring. Schedule a meeting with a local contract that says your budget and needs.
