Hotel/Motel Fire Safety
When traveling the last thing you want to think about is the possibility of a fire at the hotel you’re staying. Hotel fires can be very deadly, often taking the lives of travelers that are unaware of the danger and are unprepared for it. Many of the lives lost away from home, especially in hotel fires, could have been saved. In fact, it is unlikely that you will ever be involved in a hotel/motel fire emergency. Hotel guests are more likely to die from smoke and panic then from the fire itself. Below are a few fire and smoke safety tips:
Fire Safety Tips
- Keep your room key close to your bed and in the same place to eliminate hunting for it.
- Consider packing a flashlight and duct tape to seal out smoke.
- Recognize the sound of the fire alarm. If you are awake and by telephone call, siren, alarm, yelling, or pounding on your door, act! Don’t write it off to pranks. Never go to investigate. Leave the building immediately.
- Know how to activate the alarm. Sound the alarm no matter how small the fire. Only fight small fires. Report it first. Use a fire extinguisher and keep your back to an exit.
- Always stay out of the way and follow directions of all emergency personnel.
Smoke Safety Tips
Smoke flows quickly through a building and can blind and suffocate you. Deadly gases can overcome you in seconds.
- If you have to exit through smoke, roll off your bed and crawl low on your hands and knees. Smoke rises, so cleaner air will be near the floor. Keep your head 12 to 24 inches above the floor.
- Smoke is warmer than air and accumulates near the ceiling, blocking your view of exit signs.
- Smoke irritate your eyes. No matter how hard you try, you won’t be able to keep your eyes open.
