Storm safety tips
Spring is here and Stark County, Ohio has already had severe weather. Many homes have already had major damage in just minutes from thunderstorms, heavy rain, flooding, lightning, hail and even a tornado. Homeowners should always have a disaster plan of action and a basic emergency kit ready for when a severe storm strikes.
Here are a few suggestions to be prepared before and during the storm:
- A family disaster plan should include where to assemble in the house when the storm hits such as an interior room or basement.
- Have a back-up phone if your phone system requires electricity to work, plan to have a standard telephone or cellular phone.
- First aid kit which includes sterile dressings, antibiotic ointment, scissors, thermometer, non-prescription drugs such as pain relievers, prescription medication and supplies.
- Copies of insurance policies, identification, bank account records in a waterproof container.
- Food at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food for adults, children, babies and pets along with the can opener.
- Secure your outdoor furniture, secure any items that can be blown by high-winds.
- Use flashlights, not candles. During a power outage, use battery operated flashlights, and not candles, due to the risk of fire.
- Have fresh drinking water and ice. Freeze containers filled with water and placed in refrigerator during an outage to prevent food from spoiling.
