Difference Between Winter Storm Watch, Advisory & Warning

Frigid Weather Conditions

Winter weather has slowly been returning to Ohio this winter season. We may see one of the coldest and snowiest winters in many years past, and we may not. We never know what the Northeast Ohio weather is going to do.

The National Weather Service issues watches commerce warnings and advisories for winter weather. According to the National Weather Services here is the criteria for these products:

Watches:

  • Winter storm watch conditions favorable for a winter storm event, which is a threat to life or property.
  • Blizzard watch conditions favorable for a blizzard event low visibility about a quarter of a mile with winds at least 35 mph.

Advisories:

Winter weather advisory issued for one or more of the following.

  • Snow of 3 to 5 inches in 12 hours
  • Sleet less than a half an inch
  • Freezing rain with sleet or snow
  • Blowing snow

Freezing rain advisory:

  • Ice accumulation less than a quarter of an inch

Warnings:

Winter storm warning:

  • Heavy snow of 6 inches in 12 hours or 8 inches in 24 hours or sleet of a half an inch or more.

Ice storm warning:

  • Ice accumulation of a quarter of an inch or more.

Blizzard warning:

  • Blizzard conditions for at least three hours.
